Fromage Finds Fairhaven

A long time love of artisan cheeses lead Rachel Riggs to open her new shop, Quel Fromage in 12th Street Village in Fairhaven on December 7th. The new business is a departure for Riggs, who trained in hair styling at Sassoon in London, and owned upscale salons in the San Diego area for 21 years. One of her salons happened to be located near a cheese shop, and her passion began. During a vacation with her husband to Bellingham, she fell in love with Fairhaven.

“I knew this was it,” said Riggs. “The perfect cheese shop in a town that needs one.”

Research and shopping has occupied Riggs for months as she has visited farms and found cheese from all over the northwest and the world. The store will carry over 125 varieties of cheese and will offer them for sale to both retail customers and larger quantities to restaurants. In addition, Riggs plans to stock specialty products not available locally, such as exotic chocolates, pate, cheese spreaders, knives and platters, and homemade cheese-stuffed olives and peppers. The shop will feature guest cheesemakers and tastings, wine pairings and more.

“Teaching customers about the origins of the cheeses, how to pronounce them, and how to enjoy them will enhance their experience,” said Riggs. “Part of our job will be education, and offering samples at the shop will take the mystery out of buying cheese.”

Quel Fromage will be open daily 10-6, and a grand opening is planned in January. A website will be developed at quelfromage.com. For more information, phone the shop at (360) 671-0203.
