OUR WRITERS
Jenise
Stone is a wine enthusiast and avid foodie who lives
in Birch Bay, Washington. Jenise
studied cooking at the Culinary Arts Institute
in Napa Valley, California, and has been studying wine
at her dinner table most of her adult life. She helped
found the Food Lovers Discussion Group, an internet-based
wine and food group associated with the Wine Lovers Page.com,
and now moderates the food discussions at AOL/Netscape's
Wine Lovers Community. She meets regularly with wine
tasting groups
in Los Angeles, Bellingham and Vancouver. Jenise
can be reached by emailing jenise@tasteofwhatcom.com.
Jack
Kintner is from
Port Angeles, Washington, where he grew up the fifth
child in a family of six boys
and two
girls. He received a BA in philosophy from Pacific Lutheran
University in 1967 and a Master’s in Divinity from
the Graduate Theological Union of the University of California,
Berkeley, in 1971. He was ordained a Lutheran Pastor in
1971, spending most of his career in extended (non-parish)
service, for six years as a social worker in Michigan and
11 years in campus minsitries at Michigan State and Western
Washington University, where he was also adjunct faculty
in philosophy. A pilot since the age of 16, he began flying
commercially in 1972 and in 1985 was hired as a captain
by San Juan Airlines. He also served the Lutheran Association
of Missionaries and Pilots as a bush pilot on the BC Coast
for 18 years, during which time he also served a group
of small parishes in the San Juan Islands by plane. After
retiring in 2000 Kintner began a second career as a photojournalist,
working first for the Bellingham Herald (2001-2003) and
currently for Point Roberts Press, publishers of The
Northern Light in Blaine, Washington and a quarterly adventure magazine
called The
Mount Baker Experience.
He and his wife Linda live in Blaine with their two dogs
and a Boston Whaler named Evinrude Speed Queen. He is still
an active pilot and specializes in aerial and scenic photography,
candid portraits, sports and wildlife subjects.
Tara
Nelson grew up in
Skagit Valley, and attended Western Washington University
in journalism. Tara has been published
in the Seattle Times, NW Business Monthly, The Anacortes
American, and various trade journals. Currently, Tara works
for The Northern Light newspaper in Blaine. She has a particular
interest in food writing and her kitchen is filled with
an insane variety of condiments from all over the world.
Growing
up in the Skagit Valley, a primarily agricultural area,
has given Tara an appreciation of farming and agriculture.
She worked for several years at the Skagit Valley Food
Co-op during her teenage years. She met the farmers, saw
where the produce came from. Tara feels there's a sort
of sacredness about food. The way it's treated and the
way it's handled. But especially, the way it's prepared.
Tara takes food and cooking very, very seriously - but
not so seriously that she can't have fun with it!
