WOW! More Accolades for Dakota Creek Winery!
On the heels of the recommendation by Wine Press Northwest for our 2005 Firefighter Red Blend, Dakota Creek Winery gets another great compliment. While many wine critics list their ‘top 100’ wines, Doug Charles of Compass Wines in Anacortes pares things down for his annual Washington Wines of the Year, to the top 10 Reds and top 7 Whites. Dakota Creek Winery is honored that Doug chose Dakota Creek's 2006 Pinot Gris in his list of Top 7 Washington White Wines of the Year. Doug even commented that it was ‘extremely cheap’, and also noted that he was sold out. The winery have fixed that with a fresh shipment of Pinot Gris to Anacortes.

New Dakota Creek Winery Releases
2006 Firefighter Red Blend – This year’s blend is 57% Cab Sauv, 29% Merlot and 14% Syrah. It follows the character of the 2005 Dakota Creek Firefighter Red even though the blend has changed. On the palate you will note the black cherry and ripe raspberries nicely framed by smooth polished tannins and a generous finish. Once again, as a tribute to the men and women who protect our homes and businesses, a portion of the proceeds from the sale of our Firefighter Red will be donated to the North Whatcom Fire and Rescue Volunteer Firefighter’s Association.
2006 Syrah - This is a beautiful, dense, ruby-red Syrah. It has a clean blueberry nose with hints of freshly mown hay. On the palate it has a dry, warm, fresh acidity, and a balanced body with smooth, woody tannins. The integration of oak is complemented by flavors of cherry, currant, slight cocoa and mild black pepper. These flavors hold throughout a long pleasing finish.
2006 Cabernet Sauvignon - Their 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon is big, bold and well balanced, boasting complex aromas of dark cherry, spice and plum. Its fresh acidity and smooth body are coupled with multiple layers of berries, tobacco and spice on the palate with an extended soft, pleasant finish. Barrel aging in American Oak has smoothed the natural tannins of this varietal.
2006 Merlot - Dakota Creek's 2006 Merlot is bold, yet well balanced, showing complex aromas of bell pepper and cherries with just a hint of cinnamon. Its fresh acidity evolves into a smooth palate with layers of berries, leather and spice on the palate with a crisp cherry finish. The winery gave the berries extra hang-time in order to develop the ultimate ‘jamminess’ of flavors. This Merlot was aged in American Oak to further its complexity and enhance its tannins. Winery owner Ken Peck says "we think our 2006 Merlot will easily rival our 2005 Merlot that was recommended by Wine Press Northwest in it’s review of Washington State Merlots".
On the Horizon at Dakota Creek Winery
The 2006 Jill’s Blend has been bottled and is maturing nicely. The 2007 Dry Riesling and 2007 Viognier are still aging in stainless steel. It will be several more months before they are ready to bottle.
