Five year-old Flats Wine & Tapas Bar in Fairhaven has a new owner and more wine awards! Jennifer Branch purchased the restaurant at the end of January 2010.
A graduate of the 4-year Culinary Arts Program of Utah State University, Branch and her family moved to Bellingham from Santa Cruz, California seven years ago. During this time, Jennifer has endeavored to serve the local community on numerous boards of directors and volunteer positions.

"We love this area, and Bellingham specifically, with its family-centric activities," said Branch. "The outdoor opportunities for hiking, kayaking, and cycling are huge. We appreciate the great schools for our daughters and playing with our dogs at the dog park."

A regular customer of Flats, executive chef/owner Branch heard from friends that the restaurant in the 108 year-old Nelson Block building of Fairhaven was up for sale and decided it was time to utilize her cooking and management experience once again. She has kept the well-developed staff team of six who has been a core compliment to its ambiance and quality. She plans to add additional seasonal, local and organic items to the menu, as well as re-opening for lunch and offering a happy hour starting in April. Flamenco guitarist, Rico Castaldo now plays dinner music Friday and Saturday nights from 6:00-8:00 pm.

The 40-seat restaurant been awarded numerous accolades through the years, and just won the Wine Enthusiast Magazine's “Restaurant of Distinction” Award for the third consecutive year. The magazine judges restaurants on the depth of their wine list, their food menu and how its cuisine pairs with the wines. Flats is the only restaurant in Bellingham to receive the award.
