Serving coffee and cookies from a shack by the sea sounds like an office daydream for most, but for Dale McKinnon, it's a dream come true. McKinnon has opened Shipyard Coffee beside Fairhaven Boat Launch and Fairhaven Boatworks, and is doing just that.

Retired from the corporate world of software and engineering, McKinnon is best known locally for once rowing the entire inside passage solo to benefit Northwest Youth Services. Being over 60 hasn¹t slowed her down a bit as she takes on a new solo endeavor. McKinnon found out the business, formerly known as Shipwreck Coffee, was available from her friends at the Boatworks. It came complete with coffee and espresso makers, refrigeration and a view from Fairhaven to Lummi Shore. Shipyards, waterfront businesses and industry are nearby, as is Waterfront Park and the ferry & train terminals. Next door, Fairhaven Boatworks rents small watercraft.

"You can't beat the location," said McKinnon. "Who wouldn't want to come down here for a coffee?"

The stunning view has inspired serving excellent products, as McKinnon sought out special companies worth featuring at the waterside location. Included are Batdorf & Bronson, shade-grown, organic coffees with La Vie en Rose pastries, scones, bagels and biscotti. A unique brand of hot and iced tea from England is served. Known as Lifeboat Tea, which donates a portion of their proceeds to the Royal National Lifeboat Institute small boat rescues in England, Scotland and Wales. In addition, McKinnon will be making up some fresh rosemary Lemonade and procuring possibly a few lunch items.

Meanwhile, the outdoor seating area with the best view in town is dog friendly (bowls are handily nearby), and available for rental by parties up to 15 after closing in the evenings. Current hours are Tues 12:30-6:30, and Wed-Sun 9-1 & 3-6. Hours may expand as the summer gets busier. Call 303-3710 for information. Workers or boaters in the area are invited to call ahead for orders, and boaters may use Marine VHF channel 68 to call in. In addition, tide and wind conditions may be viewed at shipyardcoffee.com.
