Hundreds gather for Northwest Youth Services
3rd Annual
Soup for Shelter
A
light drizzle did not keep more than 500 people from
attending the 3rd Annual Soup for Shelter fundraising
event benefiting
Northwest Youth Services, an organization that provides
foster care, counseling, temporary safe homes for homeless
youths, and transitional housing.
Lines of people sampled and judge 34 delicious
soups from 31 Whatcom County restaurants and caterers
while listening
to the smooth sounds of Yambique, an Afro-Cuban jazz band.
Five soup categories – poultry, meat, seafood, vegetarian,
and vegan – were judged and a vote cast for the “Overall
Favorite Soup.”
First
place winners were: State Street Depot’s Potato Bacon Chowder (meat);
La Fiamma’s Tomato Basil soup (vegetarian); The Harborside
Bistro’s Coconut Lime Seafood Chowder (seafood);
The State Street Depot’s Creamy Chicken Jalapeno
soup (chicken) and Boundary Bay Brewery’s Vegan Tomato
Coconut.
Runners
up were: A Taste of Elegance’s Classic French
Onion (meat); Old Town Café’s Roasted Red
Pepper-Cauliflower (vegetarian); Emerald Bay Catering’s
Whiskey Crab (seafood); Callaloo’s Callaloo
Soup (vegan); and Hizzoner’s Deli’s Senegalese
Chicken and Peanut (chicken). Hizzoner's Senegalese Chicken
soup was made by Chef Sitara using chicken, tomato, onions,
garlic, peanuts, curry and various spices.
Winners
in the overall category were: Boundary Bay
Brewery and Harborside Bistro at the Hotel Bellwether.
Boundary Bay won for their Sweet & Spicy Red Pepper
Chicken Soup and Harborside Bistro won
for their
Coconut Lime Seafood Chowder. Those
restaurants received the 2006 Golden Ladel award.
The
event raised more than $11,000. All soups
were made
and donated by the participating restaurants
listed below.
